Genital Wart Removal: Popular Surgical Methods

Genital wart removal is generally not a hot topic of conversation which goes round   but is a sensitive subject to some  – especially to those who are suffering from this embarrassing condition. There are lots of home remedies for common warts, but genital warts should only be removed by a doctor because this area of the body is so sensitive. Some of the more popular surgical methods for genital wart removal are laser surgery, cryosurgery, and electrocautery.

Laser Surgery

Laser surgery is possibly the most frequently used surgical method for genital wart removal, especially for larger warts or warts in difficult-to-reach areas. This process involves the use of a laser beam which focuses solely on the wart and eradicates its blood supply without creating a wound or damaging other parts of the skin. Although highly effective, laser surgery is expensive, painful, and may even leave a scar on the skin.  However, the recovery time for removing genital warts using the laser method is much faster than traditional surgical procedures.

Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery is another popular method for genital wart removal which involves freezing the warts with sub-zero temperature liquid nitrogen.  Freezing the warts kills the infected tissue so it cannot grow or spread to other areas.  Cryosurgery typically requires multiple visits to the doctor for its completion.  Although, cryosurgery does not eliminate HPV (the root cause of genital warts), it is still a popular method for genital wart removal and has been a favorite of physicians for many years.

Electrocautery

Electrocautery is also a frequently used method for genital wart removal. This procedure involves the use of heat from an electrical current to burn off the warts.  A small wire with a low voltage electrical current running through it is applied to the wart and destroys the infected tissue.  Electrocautery is a safe and effective procedure that is typically used for removing tough-to-treat genital warts.

Genital wart removal can be a sensitive subject to give attention during your next physical.  However, it is something that should be discussed with your physician if it is an area of great concern for you.  Remember that genital warts cannot be treated like common warts.  Many of the home kits for wart removal contain chemicals that are too harsh for the genital area. So be sure to discuss your options with a physician. Whether you choose laser surgery, cryosurgery, electrocautery, or some other surgical method, your doctor and you only could find a solution that best fits your unique set of circumstances.
